takeoff | There are several takeoffs all easily accessible by a short walk from the road to the viewing site. All are steep so no second chances! Some are prone to wind shadow so beware when pulling up of the glider suddenly entering the airflow and pulling you off your feet. |

weather | Storms in the summer months can build fast. Convergence is common so check landing directions. |
rules | Military camp to the west is prohibited. Try not to fly over the police camp in Nyanga Village. ESSENTIAL to tell the police of your intentions. We have been flying there for around 20 years so it's not a problem. |
access | Three hours east of Harare on a good road (except for the last 6kms). Take the road to Marondera and turn left for Nyanga in Rusape. Take your time over this 80km stretch to Juliasdale, the rock formations are stunning. Turn left in Juliasdale for Nyanga village and turn right some 3km before Nyanga where the signpost says Troutbeck hotel (expensive). Climb up for about 12km and turn left at the World's View sign just by some horse stables. The road isn't great but you can get up it in a normal car with a bit of care. The road takes a gentle right curve as you get to the edge of the escarpment. Turn left onto a track by some Eucalyptus trees and park just off the road. If the wind is N to NW you will need to walk over to the edge along a wooden fence line. If it's more westerly you will have to go along the track to one of the westerly take offs. If coming through Mutare, take the Harare road and turn right some 10kms out of town onto the Nyanga/Juliasdale road. |
comments | This site can be flown most times of the year but highest cloud-base occurs during the dry, hot months of August and September. It can be very rough in summer. There are a number of sites along the escarpment, all are easily accessible, you may have to walk 150m at the most! The sites can be flown in winds blowing anything from northerly to south west. Chose your take-off site accordingly. Be wary of soaring the cliffs just to the north of take off in a northerly wind - you may well get slapped! Some exceptional flying is to be had at this site. Always keep an eye open for convergence cloud when in the vicinity of the site as it's a really good indicator that the site's working and it can be surprisingly localized. It is not unusual for the wind to be NE at Troutbeck Hotel and flyable at World's View. The convergence will often move west off the face of the escarpment during the day so beware of rotor and wind direction when landing. Don't delay if it's flyable at the takeoff but NE at the hotel! Storms can build VERY rapidly during summer due to the nature of the surrounding topography - Mt Nyangani and the Honde Valley are just to the east. If you are unsure of the weather conditions, DON'T FLY! The site works best from midday onwards. Has reasonable cell phone coverage. No decent medical facilities nearby. Site record is 84km towards Harare. Long O&Rs are possible too; we had a comp task here of 66km that was completed by 2 pilots. |
