takeoff | Launch is just above the giant letter Y on the west side of the mountain. Elevation is 6,300 feet above sea level or 1,700 feet above the valley below. Great view overlooking Utah Valley just above BYU campus. |
---|---|
landing | Kiwanis Park is one mile due west from the Y at 820 N 1100 E Provo, UT. Leave a car at the park beforehand and drive up to the Y trailhead parking lot to hike up to the launch site. The abandoned fields between N Oakmont Lane and N Locust Lane just to the East of the park make a great landing zone as well but are privately owned by the University. After a pilot treed his glider and the police and fire department were called, BYU doesn't want any more pilots landing there. |
weather | |
rules | Don't fly too far out over the Provo suburbs to keep within FAA regulations for paragliders, and watch out for the large power lines running north-south at the base of the mountain. |
access | It's a 30-40 min. hike with a 1,000 foot altitude gain up a steep, well-maintained, switchback trail from the trailhead parking lot. To get to the Trailhead Parking lot from Interstate 15: On I-15 take Provo Exit 265 and head east on W Center St. for 2 miles until you come to a roundabout. Turn left at the roundabout onto N 700 E and go 0.8 miles north until you get to 820 N Street. Turn right on that road and head east 0.7 miles until the road begins to turn northward and morphs into Oakmont Lane. Take your first right to the east onto Oak Cliff Drive up towards the Y and follow the curves driving Southeast until you see the signs that direct you to the Y Trailhead Parking Lot. |
comments | The best thermal comes from the nub on the ridge above the cliffs 500 yards north of the launch zone. |
