takeoff | Note: Launching a glider ('Flying from') the Killarney National Park is not permitted by the rules of the park.... however this does not exclude flying above the park. Talk off area is a clear field, at the far end of the Tomies Wood walking track. (there is a long 1 hour walk (4km) from the car to the take off area, along a well maintained off road track. The take off looks out over Lough Leane to the North and East |
---|---|
landing | Top landing is the only one possible unless you do an XC. the landing area shown is where to leave your car. The fields around here are flat, but have power lines in them. If wind increases then fly south along the edge of the lake and land near a place that is locally known as the 'Meeting of the Waters' Dinish Cottage is close to here. It is also possible to land in the bowl of the big mountains behind. |
weather | Watch the surface of the lake for indications for an increase in wind. There is a much bigger mountain behind the take off place and the winds are 10km per hour faster at the top, usually. |
rules | This site lies 200m INSIDE the Kerry ATC zone. which stretches out to the north. |
access | From Killarney go to Tomies Wood (near the Gap of Dunloe). drive as far as possible towards Tomies Wood, park your car and walk through the farmyard. The first house belongs to the local landowner, Mr. Tim Fleming, a very nice man. If you see him you might tell him your intentions and to ask for his permission. Walk from here to the take off area at the far end of Tomies Wood via the 'lower road'. You will have to walk until you are well out of the wood. The track through an ancient Oak forest is a Loop, and it is the same distance which ever way you go. |
comments | You might avoid bottom landing in the Lake... danger of death. Take off from the park lands is forbidden. (if you choose to ignore this then be discreet). The shown landing area is the car parking area. |
