takeoff | Mt Borah has 4 large launches, all covered in astro turf (N,S,E,W : 340 - 440m AGL) and has a 2WD (with good ground clearance) access road to the launches and landing areas. |
---|---|
landing | Any field you can find, except the sensitive neighbours horse paddock. Besides that it possible to land almost anywhere. Watch out for roos, trees and fencing. Try to find a road to land close to for walk-out and retrieve/hitchhiking. |
weather | Avoid flying in a northerly, as it generates rotor along the ridge. It is a private site, however once you have become a member of the flying association, you can freely fly (and VERY far) Because of the world championships held there recently, 200km in each direction people are aware of the sport and usually a lift back to the farm is quickly obtained. However have an ample supply of water with you. |
rules | Flight ceiling at 3500m ASL If flying south, keep in mind a CTR is around Tamworth, and it starts at Attunga. |
access | Fly into Tamworth. Call Godfrey at the farm and he will come and get you. Alternatively, rent a car, drive from Tamworth north to Manilla. In town, head north over the bridge and turn left after the small gas station. (follow the paraglider signs) After 1km turn right after the next bridge and follow Wimbourne Rd out to Mt Borah (11kms). After 4kms this road turns into unpaved dirt road and you go through several cattle grids. Turn right onto the farm or left to go up the mountain (all new arrivals must go to the farm to sign in to the club register and pay a site fee of A$5/day or max $30 for the season) |
comments | If its not ridge soarable then don't hang around the mountain too long, the best thermals are away from the terrain. The area around is served only by Telstra 3G cellphone network. Make sure you get a Telstra SIM and 3G phone when going there. if you don't have a 3G phone, ask Godfrey, he may have some for rent. |
