takeoff | There are two takeoffs: the most common one is the 'Oststartplatz' (east-TO) which is about 15 minutes walk from the 'Postl' car park. It is used for NE-SE winds, a clearing in the woods, so it may be turbulent if the wind comes over the trees (danger here!). The other takeoff is the 'Suedstart' used for SE-S winds, a cliff launch just a few 100 m south of the Postl-Restaurant. You should know what you are doing if you launch there. |
---|---|
landing | Three landing zones available: 'Weide Kehre' just below the TO in the first serpentine, also used as training hill by the local flight school. 'Mautstation' approx 100m south of the toll station. 'Weide Maiersdorf' out in the valley, most commonly used by hang glider pilots. Watch them land and you'll find it. Top landing next to the Postl is also possible: generally not recommended (but also generally practiced). |
weather | SW-N may be flyable but very sporty if you like lee side thermaling. It is very common that the thermals overlay a wrong wind direction and turn it flyable. Stronger westerly or northerly winds (> 10km) are really dangerous here! You will end up in nasty turbulence. |
rules | CTR Wien above 1850m. When leaving to the south or west, this will be at 2550m later. Do not XC towards Vienna, CTR is closing in and a lot of traffic around, too. |
access | Take your car up the toll road (approx € 3 per day) and park it at the 'Gasthof Postl' car park. Give others a ride up if you can. Usually you'd hitch hike back up after landing on one of the main LZ. No big deal, it's just you being the 'other' now. You can also walk the 'Völlerin-Steig' in about an hour but need good shoes for this. On XC you will very likely get a lift from the local people, they are indeed very friendly. |
comments | Hohe Wand is oriented SE and a rock cliff, so it is likely to produce good thermals all year round beginning in the mornings. It will often provide good lift until sundown. It is rather difficult to leave the site for XC, some flatland flying will be involved no matter what. Be aware of very high traffic on weekends. There will be paragliders, hang gliders, sailplanes and model aircraft sharing the same lift band! |
